1. 할리우드 차병원 CEO로 취임하신지 어느 덧 두 달이 지났습니다. CEO님에 대해 더 알고 싶습니다.

저는 헬스케어 분야에서 약 25년간 근무해왔습니다. 주로 남부 캘리포니아 지역에서 근무했습니다. 웨스트 힐스에 있는 HCA 헬스케어에서 6년간 근무했고, 그 이전에는 리버사이드 지역에서 일했습니다. 또한 미국병원협회(United Hospital Association) 이사회와 캘리포니아병원협회(California Hospital Association)에서도 활발히 활동했습니다. 그러던 중 할리우드 차병원이 지역 사회에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다는 점을 알게 되었고, 임직원들과 교류할 기회도 많았습니다. CEO 제안을 받았을 때, 이들과 함께 의미 있는 변화를 이끌고 지역 사회에 기여할 수 있는 좋은 기회라고 생각했습니다.

2. CEO로써 바쁜 하루를 보내고 계시다고 들었습니다. 주로 어떤 역할을 하고 계신가요?

할리우드 차병원은 LA를 대표하는 ‘커뮤니티 병원’입니다. 그래서 이사회도 지역사회와 깊은 유대감을 갖고 있는 의사나 응급의료종사자, 교육자, 활동가, 규제 전문가, 공공정책 전문가 등으로 구성되어 있습니다. 저는 CEO로서 이사회와 긴밀하게 협력해, 주민들에게 필요한 서비스가 무엇인지 고민하고 병원이 나가가야 할 방향이 무엇인지 설정하는 역할을 합니다.

이 외에도 신규 의료진 영입, 우수 의료 서비스 도입, 운영 효율화 등 다양한 행정 업무를 수행하고 있습니다. 이러한 과정은 모두 할리우드 차병원의 ‘팀’과 함께 이뤄집니다. 저는 이들과 협업하며 함께 변화를 만들어가는 데서 큰 보람을 느낍니다.

정리하면, 제 업무는 팀이 하나가 되어 움직이게 하며, 그 과정에서 사람들에게 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것이라고 할 수 있습니다.

3. 점차 발전해나갈 병원이 기대됩니다!
할리우드 차병원에서 최종적으로 이루고 싶은 목표는 무엇일까요?

할리우드 차병원을 LA 지역에서 최고의 병원으로 성장시키는 것이 제 목표입니다.

할리우드 차병원은 코리아타운, 리틀 아르메니아, 타이 타운, 그리고 동부 LA 등 여러 문화권이 만나는 지점에 있습니다. 여기에 새로운 환자 병동을 증축해 새로운 변화를 만들 준비를 하고 있습니다.

곧 개원할 건물에서는 현재의 수요는 물론 급변하는 미래의 의료 환경까지 반영한 최첨단 서비스를 제공할 예정입니다. 또, 모든 환자들이 편하게 진료를 받을 수 있도록 ‘다양성’을 존중하며 문화적으로도 세심한 서비스를 선보일 계획입니다.

4. 병원 밖에서의 모습도 궁급합니다.
퇴근 후나 주말에 워라벨을 지키기 위해 어떤 활동을 하고 계신가요?

할리우드 차병원에서의 하루는 바쁘지만, 그 속에서도 다채로운 일상을 즐기기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

요즘 제가 가장 좋아하는 시간은 손주들과 함께할 때입니다. 손주들이 저와 함께 시간 보내는 것을 좋아해줘서 감사하게 생각합니다.

가족과 함께하는 시간 외에는 자연에서 보내고 있습니다. 저는 어릴 적 몬태나(Mantana)에서 자라서, 자연이 늘 가까운 곳에 함께 했습니다. 강에서 낚시를 하거나 오지 하이킹, 옐로스톤 국립공원 탐험 등 다양한 야외 활동을 하며 자연과 교감하고 있습니다.

이러한 경험들은 가족과의 유대관계를 더 단단하게 해줄 뿐 아니라, 바쁜 일상 속에서 일과 삶에 대한 균형을 잡아주는 데 큰 도움이 되고 있습니다.

[영문 인터뷰]

1. How did you come to be CEO of CHA HPMC?

I received a call about an opportunity at CHA HPMC from individuals I’ve known through the healthcare community here in Southern California. I’ve spent a significant portion of my career in the region—six years at West Hills with HCA, and prior to that, in Riverside. Through my work, I’ve built relationships with many leaders, including those connected to Hollywood Presbyterian. I’ve also served on the board of the United Hospital Association and have been active with the California Hospital Association. When the call came in, it was a simple ask: “Can you come help?” Given my familiarity with the area and a deep commitment to serving communities in need, I saw this as a meaningful opportunity to make a difference.

2. What does a CEO do in a healthcare organization?

At a high level, the CEO partners with the board to define the hospital’s strategic direction and ensure alignment with the needs of the community. But beyond the administrative responsibilities, what makes this role special is its impact on people. I genuinely love working with people, and in healthcare, that translates into creating access, improving outcomes, and building a strong, compassionate team. When things are running smoothly—when we bring in new physicians, introduce new services, and streamline operations—we directly improve the health and well-being of our community. That’s the part of this work I’m most passionate about.

3. What are you hoping to do here at CHA HPMC?

What is your goal for the organization? I’m currently working closely with both the governing and managing boards to align on our strategic goals, but my vision is to help CHA HPMC become a gold standard for hospital care in Los Angeles. With the opening of our new tower, we have a tremendous opportunity to re imagine what care can look like in one of the most diverse areas of the country. Hollywood is a cultural crossroads—bordered by Koreatown, Little Armenia, Thai Town, and East LA. I spent time early in my clinical career in Boyle Heights at White Memorial and USC, so I understand how much these communities have evolved. My goal is to ensure we are building not just for today, but for the healthcare needs of tomorrow—bringing world-class services to everyone who calls this region home.

4. Any hobbies, special interests, or additional information you’d like to share?

Lately, my favorite pastime has been spending time with my grandkids—I have three, and I’m grateful they still enjoy hanging out with me! It’s been a real joy watching them grow. Outside of family, I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors. I grew up spending time in Montana, where some of my siblings still live, and I’ve done everything from fishing the rivers to hiking the backcountry to exploring Yellowstone. While I haven’t hunted in a few years, I’ve always appreciated being out in nature. These experiences have grounded me and remind me of the importance of balance and staying connected to what matters most.
